With three older brothers (Akbir, Abjid, and Bachir), life was hard, so at four, his folks sent him to live with aunt Maryam because of his naughty ways.
He started at a local Quran school in the old medina, then moved to a top school for just a few Moroccan kids, where he met future leaders like Maati Bouabid.
But he had to drop out after primary to help support the family. His early years built his strong Moroccan roots, and he followed Islam.
Career
Abderrahim Tounsi kicked off his career in the 1950s by joining the fight against French rule, landing him in jail for a year at 17. It was there, in prison, that he found his love for theater, putting on shows with fellow inmates.
Out free, he formed a group with friends to perform adapted Molière plays in Casablanca cafes, gaining notice for his sharp humor.
In the 1960s, TV came to Morocco, and he blew up with his character Abderraouf, a silly, naive guy based on a school buddy, full of funny voices, big clothes, a red fez, and colorful outfits.
The role made him a star, with sold-out stage shows, TV spots, and tapes selling thousands, even reaching Moroccan communities abroad in Europe.
He stuck to comedy sketches mostly, but dipped into TV series like Abderraouf Wa Takaoud in 2007 and films such as Majid (2011), My Uncle (Aami, 2016), Bila Houdoud (2008), and Bila Houdoud 2. His work mixed laughs with everyday Moroccan life, earning him respect as a pioneer in local humor.
He retired in the 1990s but came back for some projects before health slowed him down.
