Early Life and Education

Arthur Hindle was born on July 21, 1948, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

He was born into a military family, as his father served in the Royal Canadian Navy, which led his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hindle, to relocate to Toronto, Ontario, where he grew up in the Beaches neighborhood.

He was raised alongside his brother, Lang Hindle, who became a champion motorcycle racer, while his interest in acting was influenced by his maternal uncle, Michael Kane, a stage actor.

He attended Riverdale Collegiate Institute in Toronto before working for several years as a stockbroker and amateur photographer. He is of Euro-Canadian background and practices Christianity.

Career

Arthur Hindle began his career in the performing arts in his early twenties after leaving a corporate stockbroking role that he found unfulfilling, leading him to join the Toronto Workshop Productions theater company.

He later secured professional representation and trained at the Eli Rill workshop, where he studied Method acting and applied it in Canadian television and commercial auditions.

In 1971, he landed his first leading film role in the motorcycle drama The Proud Rider, during which he briefly used the stage name Jeremy Kane before returning to his birth name for later work.

The actor achieved international recognition when he starred as hockey player Billy Duke in the 1971 Canadian sports film Face-Off, a breakthrough role that made him a national celebrity and attracted attention from Hollywood studios.

He later became well known in the horror genre for playing Chris Hayden in Bob Clark‘s 1974 film Black Christmas, followed by a role in David Cronenberg‘s The Brood and a supporting appearance in the 1978 sci-fi film Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

During this period, he moved to Los Angeles and worked regularly in American television, including guest appearances on Dallas as Jeff Farraday and roles on Berrenger’s.

He has established a strong presence in the industry as a television director, trade union leader, and respected figure in Canadian entertainment.

From 1989 to 1994, he starred as news executive Mike Fennell in the television drama E.N.G., a role that earned him a Gemini Award for Best Actor in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role and allowed him to direct several episodes.

He has also expanded his work by serving as Vice President of External Affairs for ACTRA Toronto and appearing in independent films. In 2022, he received the ACTRA Award of Excellence for his lifelong contributions to the industry.
