When he was eight years old, his mother Sally, then eight months pregnant with a baby girl, was killed in a collision with a drunk driver; about eight weeks later, his father Dennis died by drowning. Whether that was accidental or suicide has not been definitively settled in records.
After the deaths of his parents, Adam and his brothers first lived with their grandmother from ages 8 to 12, and later moved to Winnipeg to live with their aunt Agnes and their uncle Chris, whom Adam refers to as “Dad.”
He attended Gordon Bell High School, where he enrolled in drama classes and performed in local theatre productions. Eventually he left school to accept a lead role with the Manitoba Theatre for Young People.
