Early Life and Education
Anders Matthesen (50 years old) was born on 6 July 1975 in Østerbro, Copenhagen, Denmark. When he was six years old, his parents divorced, and sometime later he moved with his mother and older brother Jesper to the suburb of Albertslund on Copenhagen’s western outskirts.
As a child and youth he lived partly on Frederiksberg and partly in Albertslund — environments that later informed much of his comedic material, often referencing suburban life and social issues.
From early on he showed interest in music: at age 12, he began rapping under the name DJ And, and together with his brother Jesper and a friend he formed the rap group The Human Beat Boys.
In 1991 the group won a Danish rap competition (DM i rap), though their promised record deal with Mega Records never materialized.
Personal Life
Outside the spotlight, Anders Matthesen is married to Cemille Rosenberg Matthesen; the two tied the knot in 2013 after having been together for several years. Their son, Spencer, was born in 2011.
Matthesen has spoken in interviews about how fatherhood and family responsibilities have changed his outlook on life and his comedic approach, suggesting a growing sense of maturity and self-reflection compared with his earlier, more rebellious years. He resides in Frederiksberg, Copenhagen.
Career
Anders Matthesen’s career began on the rap scene, but it quickly transitioned to stand-up comedy. In 1993, at age 18, he participated in the Danish Championship in Stand-up and finished second — a result that launched him into the emerging Danish stand-up scene.
Over the following years he expanded his creative work: in the late 1990s he appeared on television in youth-oriented or comedy programmes, such as Andensortering and in the sketch show Casper & Mandrilaftalen (1999).
The year 2000 marked a turning point: his album and show Hva’ snakker du om? established him as a comedian-musician. In 2003, he created the TV Christmas calendar Jul på Vesterbro, where he played nearly all roles — a project that gained cult status in Denmark.
In 2004 he made a major mark with the animated film Terkel in Trouble (Terkel i knibe), voicing all characters and writing the script.
From there, he diversified further: writing, directing and starring in feature films (e.g. Sorte kugler in 2009), performing on stage, publishing writing, and releasing music albums under his stage name Anden.
In the 2010s, he created and released the book Ternet Ninja (2016), which was later adapted into a series of animated films (first released 2018) that became among the most successful Danish films in history.
Over his career he has continued touring with one-man shows, releasing albums, writing, acting and directing — maintaining a consistent presence in Danish cultural life for over three decades.
