Early Life and Education

Gediminas Girdvainis was born on 19 January 1944 in Kretinga, which at the time was part of the Lithuanian SSR under the Soviet Union. He later pursued formal education in the dramatic arts, graduating in 1969 from the Lithuanian Conservatory (now part of the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre).

After his graduation he embarked on his professional acting career, first performing at the theatre in Šiauliai for one year, then at the State Youth Theatre (Jaunimo teatro) from 1971 until 1994, and from 1994 worked at the Vilnius Small Theatre (Vilniaus mažasis teatras) until his death.

Over the course of his career, Gediminas Girdvainis appeared in theatre, film and television, as well as in voice-acting for the Lithuanian-language versions of international films.

His theatrical repertoire included nearly 120 roles in theatre, cinema and television. On stage, he took on diverse roles in works by authors such as Anton Chekhov (for example in Three Sisters) and Nikolai Gogol (in The Inspector), under prominent Lithuanian directors.

In cinema he appeared in Lithuanian films including Herkus Mantas, Jausmai, and Ave, Vita!. He was also widely recognized for his Lithuanian dub voice work; for example he provided the Lithuanian voice of Tow Mater in the Cars franchise.
