He attended St. Albans High School and later earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Directing from Marshall University.
In the late 1980s, he completed a Master of Fine Arts in Acting at Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge.
At LSU, he also became a founding member of the Swine Palace theater company and later founded the Ignition Film Repertory Company.
