He grew up in the working-class Bom Jesus neighborhood with his younger brother Ravel, who would later become a renowned composer and his frequent musical collaborator.

From childhood Júlio was immersed in theater through his mother’s amateur group and at 15 began formal training at the Teatro Escola de Porto Alegre. He later studied Performing Arts at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) and moved to São Paulo in 2000 to pursue professional acting.

Raised Catholic in a gaúcho family proud of its Portuguese and Italian roots, he remains deeply connected to southern Brazilian culture.

Career

Júlio Andrade started professionally in theater in the late 1990s, gaining notice in Porto Alegre productions before relocating to São Paulo, where he joined the influential Companhia Brasileira de Teatro.

His film debut came in 2006 with the short O Corno, but the turning point arrived with Cão sem Dono (2007, released 2009), earning him the Grande Prêmio do Cinema Brasileiro for Best Actor.

He followed with acclaimed roles in 3% (2011), Serra Pelada (2013), and the biographical drama Gonzaga – De Pai pra Filho (2012).

Television made him a household name. After memorable appearances in Sessão de Terapia and Dois Irmãos, he starred as the idealistic, flawed Dr. Evandro Moreira in Sob Pressão (Globo, 2017–2022), a performance widely regarded as one of the greatest in Brazilian series history and which brought him three consecutive APCA awards and an International Emmy nomination.

In 2023 he directed and starred in the Netflix limited series Olhar Indiscreto. Recent film highlights include the 2024 releases O Sequestro do Voo 375 (as the real-life hijacker) and the comedy Ainda Estou Aqui opposite Fernanda Torres.

Júlio Andrade continues to alternate between leading roles in major Globo and streaming productions while returning to theater whenever possible.

He has directed two feature films and maintains an active parallel career as a singer-songwriter, having released the indie-folk album O Que Você Quer Dizer com Isso? (2018) with his brother Ravel.

Admired by critics for his discipline and range, he is often cited as the finest Brazilian actor of the post-Selton Mello generation.
