His parents were Dr. Hamid Hussain Jaffrey and Hadia Imam Jaffrey. He had two siblings named Hamid Jaffrey and Shagufta Parveen Jaffrey.

In 1945, he started studying at Allahabad University. He finished his BA in English literature in 1948. Then, he earned his MA in medieval Indian literature in 1950. Saeed Jaffrey was Indian and practiced Hinduism. He was 1.65 meters tall.

Saeed Jaffrey started his career in Indian films with a 1977 film called Shatranj Ke Khilari, directed by Satyajit Ray. For his performance, Saeed won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award in 1978.

He gained more popularity with a small role as Lallan Miyan, a paanwala, in the 1981 movie Chashme Buddoor.
