He was born into a family connected to the entertainment world—his father Sudhir was a Kannada film actor and politician, and his mother Malathi Sudhir was a stage artiste. His elder brother, Nanda Kishore, is also a noted Kannada film director.

He studied at KLE Society’s S. Nijalingappa College in Bengaluru and completed a degree in hotel management. He also worked at the Ashoka Hotel for about a year before fully committing to a career in film.

Personal Life

Tharun Sudhir met actress Sonal Monteiro on the sets of his film Roberrt in 2021, where she played the protagonist’s wife. The couple developed a relationship and were married on 11 August 2024 at Poornima Palace in Bengaluru, in a ceremony attended by notable figures from the film industry.

Career

Tharun Sudhir began his film career as a child actor in Ganeshana Maduve (1990), before taking on adult roles in films such as Excuse Me (2003), Chappale (2004), Jothe Jotheyali, Navagraha (2008), Cheluveye Ninne Nodalu (2010), Haggada Kone (2014), Gajakesari (he wrote the screenplay/story in 2014), and Vrithra (2019).

He made his directorial debut with Chowka (2017), a multistarrer known for its ambitious ensemble and technical diversity, and which won him the Filmfare Award for Best Director – Kannada.

He followed with Roberrt (2021), a commercial and critical success that became the highest-grossing Kannada film of that year and earned him the SIIMA Best Director award in 2022.

In 2023, he directed Kaatera, co-written with Jadesh Kumar Hampi. The film was another success and earned a Filmfare nomination for Best Director in 2024.

In 2020, he launched his own production company, Tharun Sudhir Kreatiivez, which co-produced Guru Shishyaru (2022) under his creative direction. His upcoming production venture, a new love thriller based on a real incident, is set to be directed by Punit Rangaswamy and produced under his banner in collaboration with Atlanta Nagendra.
