He was raised in a family with a public service and business background: his father, Riaz Ahmed Choudhary, served in a government capacity, and his mother is Shabnam Naz. He grew up alongside his siblings—his younger brother Asim, who later gained fame as well, and his sister Mahvish. His early schooling was completed at Delhi Public School, Jammu.

Following his schooling, Umar enrolled at the Government Medical College in Jammu where he pursued his MBBS and later Master of Surgery in general surgery (or equivalent).
