Ananya Bhat was born in the village of Ankali in the Belagavi district of Karnataka and grew up in Mysuru. From childhood she trained in music, studying under gurus such as K. Guruprasad and R.S. Nandakumar in Mysuru. Her father, Vishwanath Bhat, worked as an astrologer and purohit, providing a traditional background for her upbringing. She made her earliest playback recording at the age of nine for the Kannada film Olave Jeevana Lekkachara.
