Anu Prabhakar began her career as a child artist in films such as Chapala Chennigaraya (1990), Shanti Kranti (1991), and the English feature Mysteries of the Dark Jungle (1990). She debuted as a lead actress in Hrudaya Hrudaya in 1999, and quickly became a leading figure in Kannada cinema.

She formed a popular on-screen pair with Ramesh Aravind and co-starred with Vishnuvardhan in many notable films like Soorappa, Jamindarru, Hrudayavantha, Sahukara, and Varsha.
