Early Life and Education

Bhagyashree is now 56 years old and was born on February 23, 1969, in Sangli, Maharashtra, India. She hails from the royal Marathi family of Sangli and is the daughter of Vijay Singhrao Madhavrao Patwardhan, the titular Raja of Sangli, and Rohini Patwardhan. She is the eldest of three sisters, with Madhuvanti and Purnima being her younger siblings.

Raised in a conservative household, Bhagyashree pursued her early education at Jamnabai Narsee School in Mumbai. She later attended Mithibai College, Mumbai, where she earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree. Her upbringing in a traditional Marathi Brahmin family influenced her values and perspectives.

Personal Life

Bhagyashree married Himalaya Dassani in January 1990. Their relationship began during their school days and continued through college.

Despite initial resistance from her family due to cultural differences, Bhagyashree chose to marry Himalaya, emphasizing personal choice over societal expectations.

Career

Bhagyashree’s acting career commenced with the television serial Kachchi Dhoop in 1987, directed by Amol Palekar. Her film debut came with Maine Pyar Kiya in 1989, which became a significant success.  

Following her marriage, she took a step back from mainstream cinema but appeared in a few films alongside her husband, such as Qaid Mein Hai Bulbul, Tyagi, and Paayal.

She also acted in regional films across various languages, including Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, and Bhojpuri. Bhagyashree made a return to Hindi cinema with films like Humko Deewana Kar Gaye and Red Alert: The War Within.

Controversy

Bhagyashree’s career has not been without its share of controversies. One of the most significant incidents occurred on November 2, 2016, when she was involved in a hit-and-run case in Santacruz, Mumbai.

According to reports, Bhagyashree‘s car allegedly jumped a red light and collided with a two-wheeler ridden by Mohammed Tausif Shaikh, a 30-year-old medical equipment supplier. Shaikh suffered a fractured leg and other injuries as a result of the accident.

Initially, Bhagyashree claimed that her driver was behind the wheel at the time of the accident. However, witness statements contradicted this claim, asserting that Bhagyashree was driving the car.

The chargesheet filed by the Santacruz police included evidence such as call data records indicating that the driver was not present at the scene and witness testimonies confirming Bhagyashree’s presence in the driver’s seat.

Shaikh alleged that after the accident, Bhagyashree’s husband, Himalaya Dassani, visited him in the hospital and offered to cover his medical expenses in exchange for not filing a police complaint.

  Initially, the family deposited ₹25,000 for his treatment, but subsequent attempts by Shaikh to contact them were unsuccessful. Feeling neglected and seeking justice, Shaikh filed a formal complaint on December 19, 2016.

In response to the allegations, Bhagyashree denied being at the wheel during the incident, and her husband accused Shaikh of being an extortionist. Despite these claims, the evidence presented in the chargesheet led to Bhagyashree being granted bail in connection with the case.
