Karla Susana Olivares Souza (40 years old) was born on 11 December 1985, in Mexico City. Her father is Chilean, and her mother, Mónica, is Mexican. She has a sister, Mónica Souza, and a brother, Jerónimo Souza. During her early years, the family lived in Aspen, Colorado, until she was about eight, which later contributed to her acquiring American citizenship.

She studied acting at the Centro de Educación Artística (CEA) in Mexico City, affiliated with Televisa. Later, she moved to France, joining a touring theatre company.

While there, she was invited to participate in the French reality show Star Academy, but declined after being accepted into the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, graduating in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts in Acting.

Personal Life

Karla Souza married Marshall Trenkmann, an American investment banker, in May 2014. The couple have three children: daughter Gianna (born April 2018), son Luka (born June 2020), and daughter Giulia (born March 2024).

In 2018, Souza publicly revealed that at age 22, she was sexually assaulted by a TV director during production of a show in Mexico. She did not name the perpetrator but used her platform to advocate for women’s rights and the #MeToo movement in Latin America.

Career

Karla Souza’s first on-screen appearance came as a child in Aspen Extreme (1993). After her formal training, she returned to Mexico in 2008 and began acting in telenovelas such as Verano de Amor (2009) and Los Héroes del Norte (2010–2011).

Her breakout roles came in 2013 with Nosotros los Nobles and Instructions Not Included, two of Mexico’s highest-grossing films of the decade.

In 2014, she gained international fame as Laurel Castillo in How to Get Away with Murder alongside Viola Davis, appearing in all six seasons (2014–2020). Later, she starred in Home Economics (2021–2023) as Marina Hayworth.
