Irene Mary Wetton, better known by her stage name Mary Millar, was an English actress and singer whose work became widely known especially through her portrayal of Rose in the BBC sitcom Keeping Up Appearances from 1991 to 1995.

She also gained recognition for originating the role of Madame Giry in the original London cast of The Phantom of the Opera.

Early Life and Education

Mary Millar was born as Irene Mary Wetton on 26 July 1936 in Doncaster, West Riding of Yorkshire, England.

She was the child of Horace Wetton and Irene Wetton (née Merrlor), both of whom were performers in music halls.

When she was young she toured with her parents in their act called Sweethearts in Harmony. Before choosing to pursue acting she had intended to work with horses as a stable hand.

Personal Life

Mary Millar married photographer Rafael D. Frame in November 1962. Their daughter Lucy Frame was born in 1972. The couple were married until her death in 1998.

Career

Mary Millar’s first television appearance was in 1953 at the age of 17, in a show called Those Were the Days.

She appeared in series such as The Dick Emery Show and The Stanley Baxter Show. In 1960 she traveled to New York and worked as understudy to Julie Andrews in Camelot.

Her West End career formally began in 1962 with her role as Cloris in Lock Up Your Daughters.

In 1969 she played the title role in Ann Veronica, a musical based on the novel by H. G. Wells.

The role of Madame Giry in The Phantom of the Opera was created by her in London in 1986, and she stayed in that role for about four years; she is on the original cast recording.

For television, her most famous role was as Rose in Keeping Up Appearances, which she took over from another actress (Shirley Stelfox) from series 2 onward, and continued until the show ended in 1995.

From 1997 until early 1998 she took the role of Mrs Potts in the London production of Beauty and the Beast, leaving the show due to failing health.

Mary Millar’s net worth at the time of her death in 1998 was at least $1 million. Her estate and earnings derived mainly from her long stage career, television roles (notably Keeping Up Appearances) and musical theatre work including Phantom of the Opera.

Death

Mary Millar was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in January 1998. She underwent chemotherapy.

She died on 10 November 1998 in Brockley, London at the age of 62, with her husband and daughter at her side. She was cremated at Golders Green Crematorium.
