Mervat Mostafa Amin was born on November 24, 1946, in Minya, Egypt. He was raised in the Heliopolis district of Cairo by her Egyptian father, Dr. Mohammed Mostafa Amin, and her Scottish mother, who served as headmistress of the English School in Cairo.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Ain Shams University, graduating in 1967. During her time at the university, she also joined the university drama troupe and performed in Tawfiq Hakim’s play Ya Tale’ Al Shagara.
