Sara Paxton was born on April 25, 1988, in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California, to Lucia (née Menchaca) and Steve Paxton, both of whom are dentists. She is their only child.
Her mother is of Mexican Jewish descent, and her father, originally of English and Scottish heritage, converted to Judaism upon marriage. Paxton was raised in the San Fernando Valley and graduated from El Camino Real High School in June 2006.
