Early Life and Education

Shirley Mae Jones is now 91 years old and was born on March 31, 1934, in Charleroi, Pennsylvania. She was the only child of Marjorie and Paul Jones, who owned the Jones Brewing Company. Her family later moved to Smithton, Pennsylvania. Jones began singing at the age of six in the Methodist Church choir and took voice lessons from Ralph Lewando.  

She attended South Huntingdon High School in Ruffs Dale, Pennsylvania, where she participated in school plays. In 1952, she won the Miss Pittsburgh contest. Jones studied at the Pittsburgh Playhouse before heading to New York for auditions.

Personal Life

Shirley Jones married actor and singer Jack Cassidy in 1956. They had three sons: Shaun, Patrick, and Ryan Cassidy. She was also stepmother to David Cassidy, Jack‘s son from a previous marriage. Shirley and Jack Cassidy divorced in 1974. In 1977, she married comedian Marty Ingels, and they remained together until he died in 2015.

Career

Jones’s career began when she auditioned for Rodgers and Hammerstein and was cast in a minor role in “South Pacific.” She became the first and only singer to be put under a personal contract with the songwriters.

Her film debut was in “Oklahoma!” (1955), followed by roles in “Carousel” (1956), “April Love” (1957), and “The Music Man” (1962). In 1960, she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in “Elmer Gantry”.  

From 1970 to 1974, she starred as Shirley Partridge in the television series “The Partridge Family.” Jones continued to act in films and television, including appearances in “The Drew Carey Show,” “Raising Hope,” and “General Hospital.”
