Elsa Einstein was born on January 18, 1876, in Hechingen, Germany. She was the daughter of Rudolf and Fanny Einstein. Elsa had two sisters, Paula and Hermine.

The family had a close connection with Albert Einstein, as Elsa’s mother and Albert’s mother were sisters, making Elsa and Albert maternal first cousins. During their childhood, Elsa and Albert often played together during family visits. However, they lost contact when Albert moved to Milan in 1894.

Personal Life

In 1896, Elsa married Max Löwenthal, a textile trader from Berlin. Together, they had three children: Ilse (born 1897), Margot (born 1899), and a son born in 1903 who died shortly after birth.

The family lived in Hechingen, but Max moved to Berlin for work in 1902, while Elsa and the children remained in Hechingen. The couple divorced in 1908, and Elsa moved with her daughters to Berlin. After the divorce, Elsa and her daughters reverted to her maiden name, Einstein.
