Early Life and Education
Blessy Ipe Thomas was born on September 3, 1963, in Thiruvalla, Kerala, India, to Benny and Ammini Thomas.
As the youngest of six children, he lost both parents at the age of three, a tragedy that shaped his early life.
Raised in Thiruvalla, he attended Thiruvalla Rakshasainya School (until 4th standard), S.C.Seminary Higher Secondary School (until 10th), and Mar Thoma School.
He later graduated with a degree in Zoology from Mar Thoma College, Tiruvalla.
After graduation, he struggled to find satisfying work in the Malayalam film industry (Mollywood) and, in a moment of despair, considered suicide by Christmas 1986 if his career didn’t take off.
His perseverance led him to assistant director roles, setting the stage for his eventual success.
Career
Blessy began his career as an assistant director under renowned Malayalam filmmakers like P. Padmarajan, Lohithadas, and Jayaraj.
Initially uninterested in screenwriting, he began writing scripts after feeling dissatisfied with others’ work, encouraged by actor Mammootty during the development of his debut film.
His directorial debut, Kaazhcha (2004), starring Mammootty, depicted an orphaned boy’s impact on a small-town film operator’s family, earning critical acclaim for its heartfelt narrative.
His second film, Thanmathra (2005), with Mohanlal, explored Alzheimer’s disease’s effects on a family, winning a National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Malayalam.
Subsequent films include Palunku (2006, with Mammootty), Calcutta News (2008, with Dileep and Meera Jasmine), Bhramaram (2009, with Mohanlal), Pranayam (2011, with Mohanlal, Anupam Kher, and Jaya Prada), and Kalimannu (2013, with Swetha Menon), which stirred controversy for filming a live childbirth.
In 2018, Blessy directed the biopic documentary 100 Years of Chrysostom, a 48-hour-10-minute film about Christian prelate Philipose Mar Chrysostom Mar Thoma, earning a Guinness World Record for the longest documentary.
His latest film, Aadujeevitham (The Goat Life, 2024), a survival drama based on Benyamin’s novel Goat Days, starred Prithviraj Sukumaran and was a long-gestating project (2008–2024) delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
It received widespread acclaim for its emotional depth and technical excellence, with music by A.R. Rahman.
Blessy also appeared as an actor in the Tamil film Easan (2010) and the Malayalam film Best Actor (2010).
Posts on X praise his filmography, noting Kalimannu as his only less successful work, possibly due to simultaneous work on Aadujeevitham.
