Humayun Ahmed was born on 13 November 1948 in Kendua Upazila, Netrokona District, Bangladesh.

His father, Faizur Rahman Ahmed, was a sub-divisional police officer, and his mother was Ayesha Akhter Khatun.

He had two brothers—Muhammad Zafar Iqbal and Ahsan Habib—and three sisters: Sufia Haider, Momtaz Shahid, and Rukhsana Ahmed.

Ahmed’s early education took place in multiple cities. He studied at Chittagong Collegiate School, completed his SSC at Bogra Zilla School, and HSC at Dhaka College.
