He grew up in the Boston area, where during his youth he played in several rock bands before turning his attention to jazz and classical composition.

Grace studied piano and composition at the Berklee College of Music and continued his academic training at Rutgers University.

After completing his studies, he worked from 1998 as an assistant to composer Robert Ruggieri on ballet and dance theater scores, and from 2001 to 2004 he was an assistant to Oscar-winning composer Howard Shore, contributing to films such as Gangs of New York and The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
