Early Life and Education
Kulilay Amit was born on August 9, 1972 in the small mountain village of Beinan, Taitung County, into a Puyuma family.
Her parents, Wang Yu Mei, and Chang Tou-Li, raised nine children; A-Mei was the seventh and among her siblings is Saya Chang.
She grew up singing traditional Puyuma songs at harvest festivals and tribal ceremonies long before she ever touched a microphone.
After finishing junior high in Taitung, she moved to Taipei, worked odd jobs and sang in pubs while serving in a military entertainment troupe.
She is of Asian ethnicity, with no public religious belief.
Career
A-Mei released her debut album Sisters in July 1996 and sold more than 1.2 million copies in Taiwan alone within months—an unheard-of figure that instantly turned her into a superstar.
Follow-up albums Bad Boy (1997) and Can I Hug You, Lover? (1998) kept breaking records and cemented her status as the new queen of Mandopop.
Her concerts became events: fans camped overnight for tickets, and her powerful live vocals earned her the nickname “Taiwan’s Pride.”
The early 2000s brought turbulence when she sang the national anthem at President Chen Shui-bian’s 2000 inauguration, triggering a years-long performance ban in mainland China.
A-Mei responded by pushing her music even further—experimenting with rock, R&B, and electronic sounds on albums like Truth (2001), Amit (2009), and Faces of Paranoia (2014).
She became the first Taiwanese artist to sell out multiple residencies at both Taipei Arena and Shanghai’s Mercedes-Benz Arena, and her “Utopia” world tour series from 2015–2019 drew over a million fans.
A-Mei still sells out stadiums across Asia with her ongoing ASMR World Tour, mentors the next generation of singers, and produces under EMI Taiwan.
Her 2021 album Story Thief topped charts the moment it dropped, proving that after 29 years in the business she can still set trends instead of following them.
Very few artists in Chinese pop history have enjoyed her combination of commercial dominance, vocal mastery, and cultural weight.
