Formation
The band formed in 2016 when the four members, all living in the same Melbourne sharehouse, got drunk one night and wrote six songs in a single session. They recorded their debut EP Giddy Up the same week on a four-track in the kitchen and started playing house parties immediately. Within months they were supporting international acts and building a cult following for their wild, shirtless, beer-soaked live shows.
Career
Amyl and the Sniffers released two EPs in 2016–2017 (Giddy Up and Big Attraction) before signing with Flightless Records (King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard’s label) and then Rough Trade Records internationally. Their debut album Comfort to Me (2021) was a breakthrough, landing in the top 10 of many year-end lists and winning Best Rock Album at the 2021 ARIA Awards.
The follow-up Cartoon Darkness (2024) debuted at #2 on the ARIA Charts and received universal acclaim for its sharper songwriting and continued ferocity. They have toured relentlessly with acts like IDLES, The Chats, and Foo Fighters, and are widely regarded as one of the best live rock bands in the world right now.
