In the late 1980s, Pimp C and Bun B teamed up to create the rap duo UGK. Before that, Pimp C made a demo tape called “Underground King.” This tape featured his friend Mitchell Queen, not Bun B. At the same time, Bun B was part of a group called P.A. Militia with his friend Jalon Jackson.

Later, both groups united to form 4 Black Ministers. However, Queen and Jackson left the group. So, Pimp C and Bun B decided to keep going as UGK. Their demo tape and other music caught the eye of Bigtyme Records, an independent label in Houston.

They released an extended play called The Southern Way. This record grabbed the attention of Jive Records. While they were recording their first album, Too Hard to Swallow, some songs were too explicit for it. So, Bigtyme Records put out another extended play called Banned. This EP included all the songs that were too explicit for Too Hard to Swallow before the album came out.

The song “Pocket Full of Stones” was the first UGK song to get a lot of radio play in the U.S. Their second album, Super Tight…, came out in 1994. Their third album, Ridin’ Dirty, reached number 2 on the R&B Charts in 1996 and number 15 on the Billboard 200. After they released their fourth album, Dirty Money, Pimp C went to jail.
