fromis_9 (pronounced “promise nine“) is a South Korean girl group formed through Mnet’s Idol School in 2017.

Managed by Pledis Entertainment since 2021, the nine talented members officially debuted on January 24, 2018, with the mini‑album To.

Heart. Their name represents a promise (“promise nine”) to be the best girl group.

Early Life & Members

Lee Saerom

Born January 7, 1997, in Suwon, she graduated from Hanlim Arts High School and briefly studied broadcasting at Dongduk Women’s University. A former dancer and actress, Saerom finished third on Idol School and was chosen as the group’s captain.  

Song Hayoung

Born May 12, 1999, Hayoung ranked seventh on Idol School. Known for her youthful energy and predebut participation in the single “Coloring,” she’s active in vocals and choreography.  

Jang Gyuri (former)

Born December 27, 1997, in Seoul, she graduated from Seoul Institute of the Arts. Jang Gyuri placed ninth on Idol School, later joining Produce 48, but left fromis_9 in July 2022 to pursue a career in acting.  

Park Jiwon

Born December 3, 1999, Jiwon ranked sixth on Idol School and is praised for her sharp dance moves and vocal abilities, featuring in songs like “Colouring.”  

Roh Jisun

Born March 19, 1998, Jisun won Idol School. She is recognized for her warm charm and strong vocals, taking a brief break in 2022 for health reasons.  

Lee Seoyeon

Born November 8, 1999, Seoyeon ranked seventh. Multi-talented, she’s known for singing, rapping, and co-writing group songs.  

Lee Chaeyoung

Baek Jiheon

Formation

The nine contestants who survived Idol School—Gyuri, Jiheon, Seoyeon, Jiwon, Nagyung, Chaeyoung, Saerom, Hayoung, and Jisun—formed fromis_9. A pre‑debut single, “Glass Shoes,” was released on November 30, 2017. Following the show, the group was officially named fromis_9 and began preparing for their debut.  

Career

In 2018, fromis_9 made their debut with To. Heart, followed by To. Day featuring the popular track “DKDK,” and then from 9 with the hit “Love Bomb.” Their bright and energetic image quickly set them apart. In 2019, they showed artistic growth with Fun Factory, which included their first self-composed song, “Fly High.”

In 2021, the group transitioned to Pledis Entertainment and released 9 Way Ticket with standout songs “We Go” and “Talk & Talk.” Despite the departure of member Gyuri in 2022, they continued to perform strongly with Midnight Guest and held their first concerts in Seoul and Japan.

In 2023, they released their first full album, Unlock My World, led by “#menow.” By 2024, Supersonic topped Korea’s Circle Chart and expanded its visibility through festivals and pop-up events.

The group’s final release under Pledis was “From” in December 2024. In early 2025, contracts for Saerom, Jisun, and Seoyeon ended, while the remaining five members joined ASND to prepare for new music in mid-2025.

Lee Saerom
