Her mother, Sarah Kawahara, is a figure skater and choreographer, and her father, Jamie Alcroft, is a comedian and actor. Her mother is of Japanese ancestry and is Canadian; her father is from Ohio, with English, Scottish, and possibly Welsh ancestry.
She has two siblings, an older sister Alysse and a younger brother, Thatcher.

Hayley Kiyoko began her career as a child actor and model, booking national commercials. In 2007 she joined the girl group The Stunners, which released singles and contributed to soundtracks before disbanding in 2011.
She played roles in television shows and films including Unfabulous, Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins, Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster, Lemonade Mouth, Blue Lagoon: The Awakening, Insidious: Chapter 3, XOXO, and held recurring roles on Wizards of Waverly Place, The Fosters, and CSI: Cyber.
