Early Life and Education
Matthias Paul was born on December 16, 1971, in Eisenhüttenstadt, East Germany, and grew up in East Berlin during the final years of the German Democratic Republic.
His father left when he was four, so his mother raised him alone in a small apartment on the city’s outskirts. Without access to clubs or Western radio, he discovered electronic music through filtered broadcasts from West Berlin stations like SFB and DT64.
After school, he trained and worked as a carpenter, then became a broadcast technician, teaching himself to DJ and produce music at home with basic equipment. He is of German ethnicity; his religious affiliation is unknown.
Career
Matthias Paul began performing under the name Paul van Dyk in 1991 at Berlin’s legendary Tresor club, just months after the fall of the Wall.
His early singles on the MFS label, especially 1993’s “For an Angel,” became instant trance classics and propelled him onto the global stage.
His debut artist album 45 RPM (1994) was followed by the groundbreaking Seven Ways (1996), establishing him as one of trance music’s leading lights.
Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s he released landmark albums including Out There and Back (2000), Reflections (2003)—which earned him a Grammy Award in 2004 for Best Dance/Electronic Album—and In Between (2007).
After surviving a near-fatal fall from a stage in 2016 that left him with severe spinal and brain injuries, Paul van Dyk made a remarkable recovery and returned stronger with albums From Then On (2017), Guiding Light (2020), and a series of politically charged singles under his VANDIT label.
He founded VANDIT Records in 1999, launching careers of artists such as Giuseppe Ottaviani and Alex M.O.R.P.H.
A vocal advocate for music as a unifying force, he has performed at the Berlin Love Parade, the Sydney Olympics, and even addressed the German Parliament on cultural policy.
Paul van Dyk continues to headline the world’s biggest trance festivals, hosts his long-running VONYC Sessions radio show, and releases new music that blends classic melodic trance with modern production.
With more than thirty years at the forefront of the scene, his influence on generations of producers and his reputation as the “thinking man’s DJ” remain unchallenged.
