Early Life and Education

Jonathan Katz is now 79 years old; he was born on December 1, 1946, in New York City into a Jewish family. His father, Sidney Roosevelt Katz, worked as a secretary-treasurer for the AFL-CIO, and his mother, Julia, died relatively young. His paternal grandfather immigrated from Budapest, Hungary. Katz attended Goddard College, where he and his friend David Mamet studied together.

Career

Jonathan Katz’s began as a musician and songwriter. He fronted a rhythm & blues group called “Katz and Jammers” and later served as musical director for Robin Williams’ 1979 standup tour. In the mid-1990s Katz rose to prominence by co-creating and starring in Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist, an animated comedy series on Comedy Central in which the dialogue was often improvised.

In 1995 he won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance for that show. The show was also awarded a Peabody. Beyond Dr. Katz, he created and produced the sitcom Raising Dad (which starred Bob Saget and Brie Larson). He appeared in live-action roles such as on the CBS sitcom Ink (with Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen).

Katz also voiced characters in animated series including Home Movies (as Erik Robbins) and had uncredited voice roles in shows such as Squidbillies and additional appearances on Bob’s Burgers, South Park, and more.
