In 1940, Richard and his brother opened the first McDonald’s in San Bernardino, California. They started with $5,000. At first, it was a drive-in that offered many food choices. In 1948, they changed their business model. They spent three months renovating their restaurant. When they reopened, they focused on making food quickly and cheaply.

They created a limited menu with hamburgers, fries, drinks, and pie. They pre-cooked the hamburgers, wrapped them, and kept them warm under heat lamps. This innovation cut the wait time from 20 minutes to just 30 seconds. Because of these changes, they could sell a basic hamburger for only 15 cents.
