Early Life And Education

Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif was born on 23 September 1951 in Lahore, Pakistan, to Mian Muhammad Sharif, an industrialist originally from Anantnag, Kashmir, and Begum Shamim Akhtar.

He is part of the influential Sharif political family and has two brothers, including former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif; his other brother, Abbas Sharif, is deceased.

Shehbaz completed his early education at Saint Anthony’s High School, earned a Bachelor of Arts from Government College University, Lahore, and later obtained a Master’s in Economics from the same university. He is of Punjabi-Kashmiri descent and follows the Sunni Muslim faith.

Career

Shehbaz Sharif’s political career began in the late 1980s, paralleling the ascent of his elder brother, Nawaz Sharif. He was first elected to the Punjab Assembly in 1988 and then to the National Assembly in 1990.

In 1997, he became Chief Minister of Punjab, where his administration prioritized health, education, agriculture, and industrial development improvements. His performance earned him widespread recognition for effective governance.

However, his first tenure was abruptly ended by the 1999 military coup led by General Pervez Musharraf, resulting in his imprisonment and subsequent exile to Saudi Arabia in 2000.

After returning from exile in 2007, Shehbaz Sharif quickly reestablished his political presence and was re-elected as Chief Minister of Punjab in 2008. He remained in office until 2018, during which he built a reputation as a dynamic and hands-on administrator, praised for his strong oversight of the bureaucracy and a wide array of infrastructure and social development projects.

Despite a brief disqualification by the Supreme Court in 2009, the decision was later reversed, allowing him to continue his tenure. In 2018, he transitioned to the federal stage, securing a seat in the National Assembly and serving as Leader of the Opposition until 2022.

In April 2022, Shehbaz Sharif was elected as the Prime Minister of Pakistan after a successful no-confidence motion against then-Prime Minister Imran Khan.

His administration faced significant economic challenges, with efforts focused on stabilizing the economy and strengthening diplomatic relations.

He served until August 2023, when the National Assembly was dissolved before general elections. In March 2024, he was re-elected as Prime Minister, this time leading a coalition government, marking his second term in the country’s highest office.

In 2003, after an eight-year relationship, Shehbaz married Tehmina Durrani, a prominent author and activist. Tehmina is publicly acknowledged as his wife, alongside Nusrat.

Reports also suggest that he married Kalsoom Hayi in 2012; however, the marriage ended in divorce and has been denied by Kalsoom.
