He attended the Escuela Técnica Industrial in Caracas where he studied to become a technician in electrical engineering before fully dedicating himself to music and acting.

In 1966, Rodríguez married fellow Venezuelan singer and actress Lila Morillo. The two had two daughters, Liliana and Lilibeth. Their marriage lasted until 1986 when they officially divorced.
In 1997 he married Cuban-born model Carolina Pérez, with whom he fathered a daughter, Génesis Rodríguez (born July 29, 1987) from their relationship. In 2004 he became a naturalised citizen of the United States while retaining his Venezuelan citizenship.
Career
Rodríguez began his career as a singer in the early 1960s, first with the group Los Zeppy and then joining the renowned orchestra Billo’s Caracas Boys in 1963.
He made his acting debut in the 1960s television series such as Donde no llega el sol (1967) and appeared in several telenovelas throughout the 1970s including Una muchacha llamada Milagros (1974–75) and La Señorita Elena (1974).
His breakout as a solo singer came with albums in the late 1970s and early 1980s; his 1982 album Dueño de nada became a major international success.
