Gabriel Sargsyan was introduced to chess by his grandfather at the age of six. He quickly became an International Master in 1998 and earned the Grandmaster title in 2005.

His competitive career began with major junior victories, including the World Youth Chess Championship in 1996 and the European Youth Chess Championship in 1998. He won the Armenian Chess Championship in 2000 and 2003.

His most notable achievements came as a member of the Armenian national team. He was instrumental in securing team gold medals at the Chess Olympiads in 2006, 2008, and 2012, and the World Team Chess Championship in 2011.
