Meet Droupadi Murmu’s Kids: Sipun Murmu, Itishree Murmu, and Laxman Murmu

Droupadi Murmu, the 15th President of India, made history as the first tribal woman to hold the country’s highest constitutional office.

Born on June 20, 1958, in Uparbeda village, Mayurbhanj district, Odisha, she hails from the Santhali tribe, a prominent Adivasi community in eastern India.

Raised in a humble farming family, her father, Biranchi Narayan Tudu, served as a village head. Despite facing economic hardship, Murmu pursued her education with determination, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rama Devi Women’s College in Bhubaneswar.

Droupadi Murmu was married to Shyam Charan Murmu, a banker who worked with the Bank of India. The couple shared a life rooted in their Santhali tribal heritage and raised three children: two sons, Sipun and Laxman, and a daughter, Itishree.

Shyam Charan Murmu passed away in 2014, adding to a series of personal losses Murmu faced between 2009 and 2015. Her marriage to Shyam Charan was marked by mutual support, and she honoured his memory by founding the Shyam, Laxman, and Sipun (SLS) Memorial Residential School in Odisha.

She began her career as a teacher and later worked as a junior assistant in the Odisha government before transitioning into politics. Along the way, she embraced the Brahma Kumaris spiritual path, which helped guide her through immense personal loss.

Laxman Murmu
