Early Life & Education

Eddie Huang was born on March 1, 1982, in Fairfax, Virginia, to Taiwanese immigrant parents, Jessica and Louis Huang.

His mother’s family came from Shandong, China, and his father’s from Hunan, giving him a rich Taiwanese heritage of Chinese-Taiwanese ethnicity. He grew up with two siblings, Emery Huang and Evan Huang.

Eddie’s childhood wasn’t easy—money troubles, family fights, and feeling like an outsider in a primarily white suburb led to struggles, including two arrests for assault over racial tensions.

Eddie attended Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando, where he was actively involved in various school activities.

He studied at the University of Pittsburgh before transferring to Rollins College, where he earned a B.A. in English and Film in 2004.

At Rollins, he won the Barbara Lawrence Alfond English Award and the Zora Neale Hurston Award and served as Sports and Humor editor for the school paper, The Sandspur.

In 2008, he earned a J.D. from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University in New York City. At Cardozo, he worked with the Innocence Project, was President of the Minority Law Students Association, and Vice President of the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association.

Career

Eddie started as a corporate attorney at Chadbourne & Parke in New York City from 2006 to 2008 but was laid off during the 2007–2008 financial crisis.

He briefly tried stand-up comedy and ran a streetwear brand, Hoodman Clothing, from 2006 to 2009. His real calling was food, inspired by his parents’ restaurants.

In 2009, he opened BaoHaus, a Taiwanese gua bao shop in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, which became a hit for its bold flavors.

He later opened BaoHaus LA and Xiao Ye, though Xiao Ye closed after poor reviews. His blog, Fresh Off the Boat, led to his 2013 memoir, which became a bestseller and inspired the ABC sitcom Fresh Off the Boat (2015–2020), where he narrated the first season.

Eddie hosted Cheap Bites (2011) and Unique Eats on Cooking Channel, then Huang’s World on Viceland, exploring global food cultures.

In 2014, he hosted Snack Off on MTV. He directed and wrote the 2021 film Boogie, a basketball drama, and is working on a Showtime series, Panda. Eddie’s work blends food, culture, and storytelling, making him a key voice for Asian-American identity.
