Early Life and Education
Jaime Bayly Letts was born on February 19, 1965, in Lima, Peru, to Jaime Bayly Llona and Doris Mary Letts, from prominent British-Peruvian and Irish-Peruvian families.
The third of ten children, he grew up in Miraflores and was raised Roman Catholic, attending elite schools including Markham College and San Agustín.
He later studied law at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú but left to pursue journalism.
He is of British and Irish descent and was raised Catholic, though he now identifies as agnostic.
Career
Jaime Bayly began his career in journalism at the age of 18, writing for the newspaper La Prensa before moving to television in the late 1980s. His irreverent interview style and willingness to tackle taboo subjects quickly made him a sensation in Peru.
Throughout the 1990s he hosted highly rated political talk shows, often clashing with presidents and powerful figures, which forced him into temporary exile in Miami during the Fujimori regime after receiving death threats.
Bayly’s literary career took off with his semi-autobiographical debut novel No se lo digas a nadie (1994), which became a bestseller and was later adapted into a film.
He went on to publish more than fifteen novels and essay collections, many dealing openly with sexuality, family dysfunction, and political corruption. Works such as La noche es virgen (1997), Yo amo a mi mami (1999), and Los amigos que perdí (2000) cemented his reputation as Peru’s most commercially successful contemporary author.
At the same time, his television career expanded across Latin America and the Spanish-speaking U.S. market with long-running programs like Bayly and El Francotirador.
Jaime Bayly continues to host his nightly talk show El francotirador on Mega TV in Miami, where he has lived for many years. He has won three Emmy Awards for his work in American television and remains one of the highest-paid Spanish-language presenters.
His books continue to sell strongly throughout the region, and his blunt commentary on politics and culture keeps him at the center of public debate in Peru and beyond.
