Early Life and Education
Kim Woodburn was born on 25 March 1942 in Eastney, Hampshire, England to Ronald McKenzie and Mary Patricia McKenzie. She left home at age 16 and moved to Liverpool, where she worked as a live-in cleaner for a family. Her childhood was marked by trauma: she spoke of physical and sexual abuse, and of time in a boarding school where she said the nuns were “extremely cruel”.
She eventually became a professional cleaner in the 1980s, taking on various roles including domestic cleaning, working in a department store makeup counter, and even as a model.
Personal Life
Kim Woodburn’s first marriage was to Ken Davies, from 1971 until 1975. In 1979 she married Peter Woodburn, who remained her husband until her passing. She did not publicly have children. In interviews she revealed that in her early 20s she became pregnant and suffered a stillbirth, later burying the child in a park in Liverpool—an event she described in her 2006 autobiography.
Career
Kim Woodburn’s career took off when, in 2002, Channel 4 sought a “really good cleaner with quite a funny temperament” for a new show. A cleaning company recommended Kim while she was earning about £1,000 a month as a live-in cleaner. After a screen-test she was paired with Aggie MacKenzie and filming began three weeks later.
The show How Clean Is Your House? premiered in 2003 and ran until 2009. On the show she became known for her strict style, firm language, distinctive braided bun hairstyle, and frequent use of everyday “natural” cleaning agents (vinegar, baking soda).
Following the cleaning-show success, Woodburn appeared on several reality and panel programmes: she was runner-up on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! in 2009. In 2017 she appeared on Celebrity Big Brother where incidents and confrontations—including a notable clash with Coleen Nolan—sparked public and media reaction.
In addition to television, she authored her autobiography Unbeaten in 2006, revealing personal history and struggles. She also performed in pantomime shows around the UK.
Net Worth
Kim Woodburn’s net worth at the time of his death was estimated to be approximately $20 million.

Controversy
Kim Woodburn’s outspoken personality led to a number of controversies. On Celebrity Big Brother (2017) she had a very public disagreement with Coleen Nolan, which drew thousands of complaints to the UK regulator. In 2022 she faced criticism for comments about unisex changing rooms; she later clarified her remarks and asserted her support for the LGBTQ+ community.
Her autobiography’s revelation about burying a stillborn child triggered a police inquiry in Merseyside, though no charges were brought.
