He was raised by his parents, Richard Souray and Lillian Souray, alongside his younger sister, in a Métis household, and is of Indigenous (Métis) and European descent. He follows Christianity.

Growing up in Lloydminster, Souray displayed an early talent for ice hockey.

He played junior hockey for the Tri-City Americans in the Western Hockey League (WHL) and later for the Prince George Cougars.

Sheldon Souray was selected 71st overall in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft by the New Jersey Devils.

During the 2006–07 season, while with Montreal, he scored 26 goals, setting an NHL record for most power-play goals in a season by a defenseman at that time.

His career was also marked by injuries, including multiple wrist and hand injuries, which ultimately led to his retirement from professional hockey in 2015.
