Early Life and Education

Henryk Pick was born on 3 October 1949 in Wrocław, Poland, and at the time of his death in 2022 he was 72 years old. He was born into a musical family: his grandfather headed a music school and his uncle served as a professor of music.

In 1957, at around age eight, his family immigrated to Israel. He began formal music studies at age five and later attended the Conservatory in Ramat Gan, Israel. As a teenager, Pick performed in rock bands in Israel.

Personal Life

Svika Pick’s first marriage was to lyricist Mirit Shem-Or, with whom he had three children: two daughters, Sharona and Daniella, and a son. After their divorce in 2003, they continued collaborating professionally. He later entered into a relationship with Israeli fashion designer Shira Manor beginning in 2004; together they had two sons, Tim and Neal. His daughter Daniella would go on to marry American film director Quentin Tarantino.

Career

Svika Pick first came to broad public attention in the early 1970s when he starred in the Israeli version of the musical Hair. In the 1970s he became one of Israel’s top pop singers, and he was named “Israeli male singer of the year” by Kol Israel in each year from 1977 to 1980. In 1998 he co-wrote “Diva” with Yoav Gīnāi, performed by Dana International, which won the Eurovision Song Contest.

He wrote numerous songs for other artists including Eurovision entries in subsequent years, and served as a judge on the singing competition show Kokhav Nolad (2005-2009).
