Career
Andrés Bonifacio formed a new government for the Katipunan. He became the president, or Pangulo, of a nation called Haring Bayang Katagalugan. This name means “Sovereign Nation of the Tagalog People.” It is also known as Republika ng Katagaluguan, or “Tagalog Republic.” The term “Tagalog” included all people born in the Philippine Islands, not just those from Tagalog-speaking areas.
Because of this, some historians believe he should be called the First President of the Tagalogs. This is why he is not on the official list of Presidents of the Philippines.
Andrés Bonifacio was executed in 1897. Major Lázaro Macapagal carried out the execution. He acted under orders from the Consejo de la Guerra, which was led by General Mariano Noriel. They accused Bonifacio of sedition and treason against the government. Today, people see Bonifacio as one of the greatest and most influential figures in Philippine history. His role in the revolution is highly respected.
