Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who is now at the age of 36, was born on January 21, 1989, in Yerevan, in the former Soviet Union. He grew up in a family deeply rooted in professional football.

His father, Hamlet Mkhitaryan, was a celebrated striker for FC Ararat Yerevan and played professionally in France before his untimely death from a brain tumor in 1996 at the age of 33.

Henrikh’s mother, Marina Tashchyan, worked within the Armenian Football Federation, while his older sister, Monica, built a career working for UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.

Career

Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s professional career began in 2006 with local club Pyunik Yerevan, where he won the Armenian Premier League title in four consecutive seasons.

His potential led to moves to Metalurh Donetsk and then Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine, where he truly flourished as a prolific attacking midfielder, setting a league goalscoring record.

In 2013, he transferred to Borussia Dortmund for a club-record fee, becoming a star player in the German Bundesliga and earning a reputation as one of Europe’s top creators of goals.

This success led to a £30 million transfer to Manchester United in 2016, making him the first Armenian to play in the Premier League.

While there, he won the UEFA Europa League, scoring in the final match.
