Early Life and Education

Martin Reim was born on 14 May 1971 in Tartu, Estonia. He grew up in a typical Soviet-era working-class family and started playing football at age eight with local club Lõvid Tartu. The family later moved to Tallinn, where he continued his development in the Norma and Sport Tallinn youth systems.

Reim graduated from Tallinna Arte Gümnaasium in 1989 and, after retiring from playing, earned a degree in coaching and sports management from Tallinn University of Technology in 2002. He is of Estonian ethnicity and has described himself as non-religious.

Career

Martin Reim began his senior career in 1988 with Tallinna Lõvid/Norma and quickly established himself as a technically gifted central midfielder.

When Estonia regained independence he became the cornerstone of the new national team, making his debut in the country’s first official match in 1992 against Slovenia.

He spent most of his club career with FC Flora (1992–1999 and 2001–2008), winning six Meistriliiga titles, and had short spells abroad with Finnish sides Kotkan TP and Tervis Pärnu.

Reim retired as a player in 2008 holding the Estonian appearance record (157 caps, 14 goals) that still stands today.

After hanging up his boots he immediately moved into management at FC Flora, initially as assistant and then head coach from 2010.
