Tom Clare was born on September 2, 1999, in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. He grew up in Barnsley with his parents, Jonathan and Maxine Clare, and his older sister, Laura Clare.

Tom Clare began his football career in the youth systems of Barnsley and Bradford City. He signed with Bradford City in 2018 but did not make any first-team appearances. He went on to play for several non-league clubs, including Boston United, Frickley Athletic, Bradford (Park Avenue), Buxton, and Pontefract Collieries.  

In June 2021, he signed with Macclesfield FC, where he became the top scorer during the 2021–22 season with 23 goals. In January 2023, he took a break from football to participate in Love Island, returning to Macclesfield FC in March 2024 after winning Love Island: All-Stars.
