Henry II of France was born on March 31, 1519, at the Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye in France. His parents were Francis I of France and Claude of France. He had six siblings Madeleine of Valois, Francis III, Duke of Brittany, Margaret of Valois, Duchess of Berry, Charles II de Valois, Duke of Orléans, Charlotte of Valois, and Louise of Valois. Career

Henry II of France ruled during a time of great conflict. He targeted Protestants, especially Calvinists called Huguenots. He punished them harshly. For example, he burned some at the stake and cut off the tongues of others for speaking against the church. In April 1551, Edward VI, the King of England, made Henry II a Knight of the Garter. By July 19, after a lot of negotiation about the dowry, Henry II‘s daughter, Elisabeth, got engaged to Edward.

Henry II of France created the idea of patents. A patent is a way for inventors to protect their inventions. Inventors must share details of their inventions to get exclusive rights. This description is known as a patent specification. The first patent specification was from Abel Foullon. He invented a device called the holmetre, which is a rangefinder. However, the publication of his patent was delayed until after it expired in 1561.
