Early Life and education

Now at the age of 74, Mercedes Milá was born on 4 April 1951, in Esplugues de Llobregat, a municipality in the province of Barcelona, Spain. She was born into an aristocratic-background family: her father José Luis Milá Sagnier held the title of Count of Montseny and worked as an attorney, while her mother Mercedes Mencos Bosch came from a noble family. She grew up as the eldest of six children, including her brother Lorenzo Milá, who also pursued a career in journalism.

Milá initially enrolled in studies of Philosophy and Letters in Barcelona but eventually abandoned that path to focus on journalism. She completed her studies in journalism and arts at university in Barcelona, earning a bachelor’s degree in journalism.
Her upbringing took place in a Spanish Catalan cultural environment, where her family and social background influenced her formation and eventual career path.

Personal Life

Mercedes Milá has kept much of her personal life away from constant media exposure, but what is publicly known is that she had a long-term relationship with film producer José Sámano de la Brena, lasting about twenty years though they did not formalise marriage. She was later linked to businessman Carlos Castillo; that relationship ended after a few years. She does not have children at this time.

Career

Mercedes Milá’s professional journey began in journalism and radio. After finishing her studies in 1974, she worked in the newspaper El Correo de Andalucía and contributed to the sports magazine Don Balón. In the mid-1970s she entered the newsroom of the Spanish public broadcaster Televisión Española (TVE), initially in the sports division from around 1974 to 1978.

In 1978 she made the move to on-screen presenting, co-hosting the interview programme Dos por Dos alongside Isabel Tenaille, which gave her greater visibility. She returned to television in 1982 with the programme Buenas Noches where she stayed until 1984; the show helped consolidate her presence as a presenter.

Over the years she worked at regional broadcaster TV3 and then at Antena 3 where she presented programmes such as Queremos Saber.

The decade-turning point in her career arrived in 2000 when she became the host of the Spanish version of the reality show “Big Brother” (Gran Hermano) on Telecinco. She would go on to present fifteen of the first seventeen regular editions of that show (all except seasons three and seventeen) and multiple all-star editions. During this time she also co-hosted investigative journalism programmes such as Diario de… from approximately 2004 to 2014.

In later years Milá turned to more literary- or interview-based formats: for example, in 2016 she presented con Z de Zweig (a reading-motivation programme) and between 2019 and 2021 she hosted Scott y Milá on Movistar+. More recently she signed a contract in 2023 to return to RTVE to co-present a new interview programme titled No sé de qué me hablas.
