Early Life And Education

Career

Louis XII was the second cousin of King Louis XI. King Louis XI made him marry his disabled daughter, Joan. He did this to weaken the Orléans branch of the Valois family. When Louis XII became king in 1498, he annulled his marriage to Joan. He got this annulment from Pope Alexander VI. After that, he married Anne, the Duchess of Brittany. Anne was the widow of Charles VIII. This new marriage helped unite Brittany and France more closely.

Louis XII was a powerful feudal lord. He fought against the French monarchy in a conflict called the Mad War. In 1488, he was captured after the royal victory at the Battle of Saint-Aubin-du-Cormier. However, Charles VIII showed mercy and pardoned him. After his release, Louis joined the Italian Wars. He started a second campaign to gain control of the Kingdom of Naples. In 1500, he conquered the Duchy of Milan. Then, in 1501, he took over the Kingdom of Naples.

Louis XII was different from many French kings. He did not take power away from local governments or the nobility. Most kings tried to rule absolutely, but Louis chose a different path. People liked him and called him the “Father of the People.”

He earned this title because he lowered taxes, made legal reforms, and helped maintain peace in France. Louis XII died in 1515, and he did not have a son to take over. His cousin and son-in-law, Francis I, became the next king. Francis came from the Angoulême branch of the House of Valois.
