In 1998, he was elected to the U.S. Senate, defeating incumbent Republican Al D’Amato. As Senator, he became known for his media-savvy approach and policy leadership. He served as Chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and later as Senate Democratic Leader.
