Early Life and education

Kang Dedi Mulyadi is now 54 years old.

He was born on 11 April 1971 in Sukasari, Subang, in the province of West Java, Indonesia.

He grew up in a large family as the youngest of nine children.

His father, Sahlin Ahmad Suryana, served in the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), and his mother, Kasiti, was known for social involvement (e.g. Indonesian Red Cross activism).

He attended SD Subakti in Subang, graduating in 1984, then went on to SMP Kalijati in Subang, finishing in 1987, and then SMA Negeri Purwadadi in 1990.

After completing high school, he relocated to Purwakarta to pursue higher education.

He enrolled at the Sekolah Tinggi Hukum Purnawarman (Purnawarman School of Law) in Purwakarta, where he studied law and graduated in 1999 with a law degree (Sarjana Hukum).

During his student years he was active with the Muslim Students’ Association (Himpunan Mahasiswa Islam), and his activism and connections in student organizations laid an early foundation for his public role.

Personal Life

Dedi Mulyadi first married Sri Muliawati, and from that marriage had a son, Maulana Akbar Ahmad Habibie.

After Sri Muliawati’s death, he later married Anne Ratna Mustika, a former Miss Purwakarta and also his successor when he left the regent post.

With Anne Ratna Mustika he had two children: Yudistira Manunggaling Rahmaning Hurip and Hyang Sukma Ayu.

In 2022, Anne Ratna Mustika filed for divorce, citing psychological abuse; a court process ensued, and the Supreme Court of Indonesia approved the divorce in 2023.

Following that, Dedi Mulyadi is legally divorced.

Career

Dedi Mulyadi’s political career formally began in 1999, when he became a member of the Purwakarta local legislative body under Golkar, representing Tegalwaru electoral district.

He held positions as vice‑secretary and secretary in that body, later rising within Golkar’s local leadership in Purwakarta.

From 2003 to 2008, he served as vice‑regent of Purwakarta under Lily Hambali Hasan, becoming one of the youngest to hold that post.

In 2008, Dedi Mulyadi was elected regent of Purwakarta, and re-elected in 2013 for a second term.

His regent tenure became distinctive for combining infrastructure development, environmental programs (notably waste management initiatives), cultural revival (especially of Sundanese identity), and social programs for disadvantaged communities.

His “Kang Pisman” program (Kurangi, Pisahkan, Manfaatkan – Reduce, Separate, Utilize) on waste management became a signature policy in Purwakarta.

After completing his regency tenure in March 2018, he ran (unsuccessfully) as running mate with Deddy Mizwar in the West Java gubernatorial election.

In the interlude, he remained politically active, engaging in social outreach, teaching, and network building.

In 2019 he won a seat in the national People’s Representative Council (DPR RI) representing West Java’s 7th electoral district under Golkar.

In May 2023, he announced his resignation from Golkar and joined the Gerindra party.

In the 2024 general election, he stood again in the same district and secured a high vote count.

Meanwhile, he ran for governor of West Java in 2024, with running mate Erwan Setiawan, and won decisively, capturing 62% of the vote and winning in all 27 regencies and cities.

He was inaugurated as governor on 20 February 2025.

One of his early gubernatorial moves included dismissing a public school principal who violated his directive regarding student trips outside the province.

His wealth would have been accrued through his official salaries, allowances, investments, and possibly business or property holdings.

Controversy

Over his career, Dedi Mulyadi has faced accusations and controversies, particularly from conservative Islamic groups.

During his regency, the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) accused him of engaging in polytheism (musyrik) because he had erected statues of Sundanese puppet (wayang) characters in public parks and used Sundanese greetings like “sampurasun” instead of Islamic salutations.

His use of cultural symbolism (including headbands) led to speculation about mysticism and traditional beliefs.

His divorce with Anne Ratna Mustika generated public debate, with her allegations of psychological abuse and the legal process drawing media scrutiny.

As governor, his decision to send misbehaving students to military barracks for rehabilitation drew criticism from human rights groups and some parents, who argued that the policy may infringe on children’s rights.

He has also stirred tension among political elites when aggressively scrutinizing regional budgets, contracting processes, and local bureaucracy.

Some rivals accuse him of political grandstanding and intention to build a broader political career beyond the province.
