Early Life and Education

Hermann Wilhelm Göring was born on January 12, 1893, at the Marienbad Sanatorium in Rosenheim, Bavaria, Germany. He was the son of Heinrich Ernst Göring (1839–1913), a former cavalry officer, colonial governor, and German consul general in Haiti, and Franziska Tiefenbrunn (1859–1943), a Bavarian peasant woman.

Göring was the fourth of five children from his father’s second marriage, with siblings including Karl Ernst Göring, Olga Therese Sophia, Paula Elisabeth Rosa, and Albert Göring. He attended grammar schools in Fürth and Ansbach before enrolling in military school in Karlsruhe in 1905.

Göring graduated at the top of his class in 1912, passing his officer exam, and was subsequently commissioned into the Bavarian Prinz Wilhelm Regiment (112th Infantry) in Mulhouse. He was of Jewish ethnicity and practiced Christianity.

Career

Hermann Göring began his career as a pilot in World War I, where he earned recognition for his skill as a fighter ace, eventually being awarded the prestigious Pour le Mérite. After the war, he joined the Freikorps, a paramilitary group, and later became involved in the National Socialist German Workers’ Party (Nazi Party), quickly rising through its ranks due to his charisma and military experience.

As a close ally of Hitler, he was appointed as the head of the Luftwaffe in 1935, overseeing its expansion and role in the German military during World War II.

Under Göring’s leadership, the Luftwaffe played a key role in the early successes of Nazi Germany, particularly during the invasions of France and the Battle of Britain. However, as the war turned against Germany, Göring’s influence waned. His failure to adequately defend German cities during Allied bombing raids and his unsuccessful strategies contributed to his fall from favor with Hitler.

By the war’s end, Göring had become a scapegoat for the Nazi leadership’s failures, and his wealth and properties were seized by the Allies.

In the aftermath of World War II, Hermann Göring was arrested and stood trial at the Nuremberg Trials. Despite his efforts to defend himself, he was convicted on several counts of war crimes, including crimes against humanity and looting of public and private property. He was sentenced to death, but just hours before his execution, he committed suicide by cyanide poisoning in his prison cell on 15th October 1946, avoiding his sentence.

Personal Life

Hermann Göring was married twice. His first marriage was to Carin von Kantzow on February 3, 1922, but she passed away in 1931. On April 10, 1935, he married his second wife, German actress Emmy Sonnemann, with Adolf Hitler serving as their best man.

They had one daughter, Edda Göring, born on June 2, 1938. Edda’s name was reportedly inspired by either a friend of Emmy’s or possibly the daughter of Benito Mussolini. Göring died on October 15, 1946, in Nuremberg Prison, where he had been incarcerated following World War II.

Net Worth

Hermann Göring’s net worth was estimated at over $100 million, primarily due to his extensive control over Nazi war industries, properties, and the looting of occupied countries. He accumulated vast wealth through his control of the Luftwaffe, art collections, and investments in key Nazi enterprises.

After the war, most of his wealth was confiscated by the Allies, and the remains of his fortune were seized or redistributed.
