Early Life and Education

Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka was born on December 24, 1953, in Tseikuru, Kitui County, Kenya. He is the son of Peter Musyoka Mairu and Sarah Malia Musyoka.

Musyoka has two siblings: Lilian Koki Mutui and James Nzilu Musyoka. He began his education at Tseikuru Full Primary School and later attended Kitui High School for his O-levels. He completed his A-levels at Meru School in 1973.

Musyoka pursued higher education at the University of Nairobi, earning a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree in 1977. He then attended the Kenya School of Law, obtaining a Postgraduate Diploma in Law in 1978.

In 1979, he furthered his studies at the Mediterranean Institute of Management in Cyprus, where he earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management. In 2009, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Divinity by the Latin University of Theology.

Career

Kalonzo Musyoka’s early political career was marked by key roles within the Kenya African National Union (KANU) party, where he served as Secretary from 1980 to 1988. During this period, he also held government positions such as Assistant Minister for Works (1986–1988) and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly (1988–1992).

Under President Daniel arap Moi, Musyoka was appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1993 to 1998 and later served as Minister of Education until 2001. When Mwai Kibaki became president, Musyoka returned to the Foreign Affairs Ministry (2003–2004) and then served as Minister of Environment (2004–2005).

In the 2007 presidential election, Musyoka ran as a candidate but finished third with around 9% of the vote. Following the post-election violence, he was appointed Vice President and Minister of Home Affairs in the coalition government formed between President Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga.

He maintained these positions in the Grand Coalition Cabinet and played a significant role in the 2010 constitutional referendum campaign. His political career since then has involved close alliances with Odinga, serving as his running mate in the 2013 Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) and again in the 2017 National Super Alliance (NASA).

In the 2022 elections, Musyoka initially launched a presidential bid but later withdrew to support Odinga’s Azimio la Umoja coalition.

Beyond electoral politics, Musyoka has contributed extensively to peacebuilding and diplomacy in Kenya and the wider region. Since 2013, he has been Chancellor of Uganda Technology and Management University, and in 2019 he was appointed special envoy to South Sudan, where he helped broker a peace agreement in 2020.

He founded the Kalonzo Musyoka Foundation to promote peace, democracy, and poverty reduction across Africa. Recognized for his mediation efforts in conflicts involving South Sudan and Somalia, Musyoka has received honors such as the Akinkaju/Tembo Award for peace work and remains a respected figure in Kenyan politics and regional diplomacy.
